Topic: When is the right time for psychiatric referral?
Presenter: Dr. Shivā Dibāei, psychiatrist and EFT couple therapist
In this session, Dr. Dibāei presented the audience with sign and symptoms of prevalent psychiatric diagnoses such as major depression, complex anxiety disorders, personality disorders and somatoform disorders, along with more sensitive and minute signs that EFT therapists need to be aware of as they might possibly point to a need for medical and psychiatric interventions. She also emphasized that in cases of suicidal ideation, psychotic breakdowns or threatening behavior, therapists need to make sure that they refer their clients for emergency psychiatric services. Dr. Dibāei also responded to participants’ questions regarding the delicate boundaries of referring a client, collaboration between psychiatrist and clinical psychologist as well as ethical challenges in making a referral. She also emphasized the importance of continuous education for EFT therapists so that they can make appropriate and more effective referrals. This session provided the participants with a valuable opportunity for EFT therapists to enhance their clinical skills in referring clients for psychiatric services and to develop better cooperative skills when working with a psychiatrist.
