Emotionally focused therapy (henceforward EFT) is a short term and structured approach to coupe therapy that was developed by Sue Johnson and Leslie Greenberg in the eighties. This therapeutic modality is also applicable in working with families and individuals. EFT interventions draw upon experiential, humanistic and systemic approaches in order to reconstruct emotional experiences and interactions respectively. Considerable research literature confirms the positive effect of EFT that speaks to the effect size of this approach throughout the course of therapy. EFT has been utilized in working with different couples and in different settings such as private practices, hospitals and training bodies successfully. Initial research about the use of EFT in treating couples with depression, trauma-related anxiety, treatment-resistant illnesses and those who are still confused and doubtful over forgiving their spouses has been conducted with satisfactory results. Besides this, EFT has been successfully applied in different cultures and in working with traditional and non-traditional people from different educational levels in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and Asia. EFT's robustness lies on its focus on the new science of love relations. This therapeutic modality offers the following to its practitioners: Clear focus on elements of relational distress that have recently emerged from research on affects in distressed relationships and on satisfaction in relationships. EFT provides therapists with a clear, detailed and goal-oriented map of relational problems and relational strengths. EFT is also highly adaptable. Successfully applied in the treatment of psychological issues, it consists of a coherent and systematic collection of strategies and interventions and a change process in three levels and nine steps. In this model, developmental turning points have been meticulously worked upon and integrated with the results. EFT has served as the founding stone of the first integrated, research-based theory of love and adult attachments. This illuminating framework gives us a clear understanding of the despair derived from psychological distress and delineated the treatment goals and all the steps and key moments required for redefining love relations. EFT is also apt at identifying the strengths of a couple. From EFT's perspective, unprocessed negative affects culminate in psychological distress. American Psychological Association (APA) recognizes EFT as an experimentally researched therapeutic approach which has been tested in different situations and by different researchers using various research tools and methodologies. EFT has been proved useful in treating attachment wounds due to betrayals and longitudinal studies as well prove the durability of its therapeutic effects. The affective elements EFT deals with feed into the rigid and inflexible interaction patterns represented in pursuing and withdrawing strategies and at the same time reinforce and endure them which subsequently puts forward an obstacle on safe emotional engagement which is prerequisite of safe emotional bonds. EFT considers development and restructuring key affective responses between the couple, establishment of a positive change in their positions and interaction patterns as well as establishing a safe haven and secure emotional bond between the couple as its primary goals.

Based the results of researches conducted in the last 30 years, Dr. Johnson’s model (EFCT) has proven to be effective in at least 70 % of couples referred for therapy. So far, EFCT is the one and only couple therapy modality to be branded with APA’s Golden Standard amongst various forms of couple and family therapies.
